Minecraft Ore Lamp (WLED · ESP32-C3)
Personal build of Minecraft Ore Lamp (WLED / ESP32 D1 Mini USB-C) by Rauks (MakerWorld, CC BY 4.0) — adapted to run a WS2812B LED strip instead of the 50 mm LED ring, with Home Assistant integration and zigbee-button control.
Status
- Verify strip type (5 V WS2812B, 3-wire, 144 LEDs/m)
- Flash WLED on ESP32-C3
- Solder all segments — 20 LEDs as 2×8 + 1×4
- 10-minute soak test clean
- 3D prints (in progress)
- Final assembly + diffuser
- WLED presets (diamond / redstone / emerald / iron cycle)
- Home Assistant automation (zigbee button)
Bill of Materials
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| ESP32-C3 supermini (USB-C) | Chosen over Wemos D1 Mini: actively supported by WLED development, cooler/more efficient, USB-C |
| WS2812B LED strip, 5 V, 144 LEDs/m | 20 LEDs used (~139 mm); remainder kept as spare |
| 28 AWG silicone wire | red = 5 V, black = GND, green = data |
| USB wall charger, 2 A+ | One source powers board + LEDs; no separate LED feed |
| 330 Ω resistor (optional) | In data line at strip's first DIN, only if glitches return |
Power
- 20 LEDs × ~60 mA full white = 1.2 A, + ~0.3 A board ≈ 1.5 A peak → single 2 A charger is sufficient.
- Recommended: WLED current limiter (Settings → LED Preferences → Max Current) at ~1300–1400 mA.
- Strip 5 V ties to board 5V/VIN pin, common GND; no second power source.
Wiring
- Data: C3 GPIO 2 → first segment DIN (arrow/input end).
- Chain: each segment's DOUT → next segment's DIN; 5 V and GND daisy-chained hop to hop.
- Layout: three segments (8+8+4) arranged to fit the printed LED bay of the base.
- Data pin: ESP32-C3 GPIO 2 (confirmed), set in WLED LED Preferences.
Build log
- 2026-10-08 — Strip identified: 3-wire, individually addressable, cut lines every LED → 5 V WS2812B. Data pin: GPIO 2.
- First wiring (4×5): only LED 1 lit → wire overhung a solder pad and crossed an LED leg (short). Fixed.
- Random single-LED color changes → loose connection. Rebuilt as 2×8 + 1×4 with cleaner routing; 10-min soak test clean.
- No series resistor or capacitor needed at 20 LEDs; WLED defaults fine. Add 330 Ω data resistor only if glitches return.
Home Assistant
- WLED exposes itself; the HA WLED integration auto-discovers it on LAN.
- Planned: zigbee button → toggles lamp / cycles ore-color presets; night-mode brightness cap for a kids-room night light.
